The reason is because you need to enable notifications first.
To do this, go to Settings > Account.
You then need to insert your email address in the 'Notification emails' section.
Note: After typing your email address in the Notification emails field, you need to press enter for your email to become valid.
Finally, click on 'Update account information' for your changes to be saved and you are done!
